Travelling to Germany?

Postby Kathrin on Thu Dec 04, 2008 8:48 am

Hi everybody, after neglecting this site a bit in the past 2 months (yes, I feel bad about it :? ), the stressful weeks in my job are finally ending... My holiday is near and I'm getting a little bored ;) So if anybody needs information on travelling to/in Germany or is planning to visit Germany this or next month let me know. I've some time to show you around in the city area (Cologne) or for some trips...

Greetings from cold Germany to all, Kathrin

Hi Kathrin.

So kind of you to let yourself available to memebers of this site. I have some plans to visit Germany and so far seen only Berlin .Next time when i visit iwish to visit your city and to meet you ofcourse. Not decided yet about my travel plans...waiting for the winter to get over (otherwise i have to carry BIG baggage with overcoats, sweaters etc!!) though i like winter season.
Which month would be the best in your opinion to visit your city..other than summer(because summer is always here!)

If you have plans to visit India and my city Chennai, you are welcome and i can show you around and may be offer youa ccommodation.

Hi Suru,

I'm glad you sound like you enjoyed your visit to Berlin and Germany. Well, if you don't want to visit Germany in winter - which I understand, cause sightseeing in the rain isn't that much fun - I would recommend spring or fall. This way you can also avoid summertime as you said.
In spring I would go for April/May and in fall September or October (but not later, because it's getting colder and rainy in October already).
I hope this is helpful to you and don't hesitate to ask if there are further questions. Let me know when you decide to come over - I'll gladly take the time to show you the city or to give advice.
Bye for now, Kathrin

Hi Kathrin,
I am planning on making a trip to Frankfurt between Christmas and New year's so planning on staying no more than a week at most. I would like to visit Cologne and perhaps Hamburg. I have very limited funds for this trip and my decision to travel this time of the year is because I don't know if I'll be able to get any time-off work later. I was wondering if you could help me figure out how much I might need for expenditures. You think I could get through the week with about 300 Euros? I wouldn't mind just staying close to frankfurt and just go around there sight seeing.

I was in Frankfurt last year just before Christmas and really enjoyed it. The Christmas markets will probably keep me occupied all week! Can't wait to have some 'Glu wine' :) is that how you spell it? Well any suggestions you can give me would be most appreciated.

Thanks.
Karthik.

Hello Cathrin

i lived in Ulm, Germany for 6 months. i loved it, i saw most of south Germany (Stuttgart, Rust, Lindau, Munich and Regensburg)

I really wanted to go to the north (Frankfurt, Cologne, Dusseldorf or Berlin) but unfortunatly it didn't happen.

anyway i really love Germany and looking forward to visit it in the future, So, between while and another you will find me here asking diffirent questions about Germany

My first question : what are the places that must be visited in coln and how many days does it need ?

sorry i didn't stay overnight in koln, i just saw the banner on the day i passed the city from the station. a a glance, my impression about the city, it was very orderly and clean, not as crowded as brussels nor amsterdam. however, this link may help you http://www.globosapiens.net/travel-info ... n-317.html.

Hi everybody!
I will try to answer your questions concerning Köln (Cologne) and Frankfurt.
The christmas markets in the cities are really worth a visit - and they will keep you busy Amer:) I guess if you will mainly stay in the Frankfurt area and don't buy half the christmas market, then 300 euro should be fine - the public transport isn't too expensive and there are cheaper 3 or 5 day tickets. I guess in Frankfurt it can be a bit hard to find cheap accommodation, but there are some good hostels...I will look for a link in the next days, but there should be something online under "Jugendherberge Frankfurt"...

It's good to hear that you are interested in seeing more of Germany, Karthik. In Cologne, you can see the most important sights in about 2-3 days, if you're not taking long breaks;) There is a famous cathedral next to the centre, so you can easily connect these sights. Then there are many museums in Cologne (Roman times, art, chocolate,...). This link can give you more information in English: http://www.koeln.de/en/index.html

Festivals mainly take place in summer, but there are concerts and fairs in winter. The carnival takes place in february or march here and then the people go crazy and the city is very crowded - as is the city centre each saturday;) But usually Michael is right, the city isn't to crowded on a normal day. If the weather isn't too bad you can also do a river tour on the Rhine and look at some important buildings from the boat. There are also some interesteing cities and landscapes near Cologne, but that would mean a longer trip.

I hope this reply isn't to long and confusing - I tried to answer everybody. If I missed a point let me know and I'll try my best!

Hi Kathrin,

Thanks for the information and your kind message. I think i would prefer month of MAY because i would like to escape Indian summer!
Thank you so much for your kind words to show me around your city and for the advice. How may days do you think i should spend in your city?
What is your opinion that howw many days should i spend in other important cities in Germany( except Berlin and Frankfurt since i have already visited these two cities).?

If you are planning to visit Chennai, please let me know.

Take care,
Suru

Hi Suru,

thanks for your nice offer to help me if I visit Chennai!

I think May is a good choice:) I guess for most German cities (except Berlin) 2-3 days are enough time to see the important sights. Other nice cities are Hamburg (at the sea) in the north, Dresden (historic buildings) und Leipzig in the east and Munich (quite expensive), Nuernberg or Stuttgart in the south.
If you want to get some information about sights in Germany, I recommend this link: http://www.germany-tourism.de/index_ENG.htm
Then you can decide yourself what's most interesting to you:)

All the best, Kathrin
